The American Hockey League released their All-Star rosters on Wednesday, and on the Atlantic roster was a prospect Philadelphia Flyers fans ought to learn about – Samu Tuomaala.
Tuomaala, 21, is currently playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and has had an excellent first season in North America. The Flyers’ 2021 second-round pick has scored 10 goals, 17 assists, and 27 points in 33 games played after spending his early career in Finland.
Tuomaala’s production is ironic and perhaps unprecedented. In parts of three seasons in Liiga – Finland’s top division of hockey – Tuomaala managed one goal and two assists in 40 games. Fast-forward to 2023-24, and the winger is suddenly setting the AHL on fire as a 20-year-old. He turned 21 on Monday.
Joining the Flyers draftee at the AHL All-Star game will be other top prospects, such as Brandt Clarke, Olen Zellweger, Dustin Wolf, Simon Edvinsson, Brad Lambert, Yaroslav Askarov, Logan Stankoven, Mavrik Bourque, Jiri Kulich, Dennis Hildeby, Logan Mailloux, and Brennan Othmann. As it stands, Tuomaala will be the lone player representing the Flyers organization and the Phantoms as an AHL All-Star this year.
